Biomechanical Engineering

In the field of biomechanical engineering, the musculoskeletal system of the human body is viewed as a mechanical structure that can undergo certain motions and stresses. Thus, it includes the analysis of human gait and the investigation of stresses on flesh and bone during accidents. Biomechanical engineering is also concerned with the flow of blood, the mechanics of respiration, and energy exchange in the living human body. Applications range from the development of protective automotive safety belts to the design and operation of heart-lung machines. An important early development was the iron lung, which permitted some victims of poliomyelitis to survive. Biomechanical engineering also forms the basis of reconstructive developments such as artificial implants and artificial limbs.

Substances in marijuana show promise for fighting deadly drug-resistant bacterial infections, including so-called "superbugs," without causing the drug's mood-altering effects. Researchers tested five major marijuana ingredients termed cannabinoids on different strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a "superbug" increasingly resistant to antibiotics. All five substances showed potent germ-killing activity against these drug-resistant strains, as did some synthetic non-natural cannabinoids. The scientists also showed that these substances appear to kill bacteria by different mechanisms than conventional antibiotics, making them more likely to avoid bacterial resistance. At least two of the substances have no known mood-altering effects, suggesting that they could be developed into marijuana-based drugs without causing a "high."

Dark Matter

Evidence indicates that the matter that scientists detect in the universe is only a small fraction of all the matter that exists. For example, observations of the speeds at which individual galaxies move within clusters of galaxies show that a great deal of unseen matter must exist to exert sufficient gravitational force to keep the clusters from flying apart. Cosmologists now think that much of the universe is dark matter — matter that has gravity but does not give off radiation that we can see or otherwise detect. One kind of dark matter theorized by scientists is cold dark matter, with slowly moving (cold) massive particles. No such particles have yet been detected, though astronomers have made up fanciful names for them, such as Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). Other cold dark matter could be nonradiating stars or planets, which are known as MACHOs (Massive Compact Halo Objects).

Agriculture: Manure

Using manure wisely can offset some commercial fertilizer purchases, while providing additional micronutrients and valuable organic matter to the soil. Nitrogen and phosphorus are not the only valuable nutrients in manure. Potassium and a variety of micro-nutrients are also present. In addition to specific nutrients, the high organic content of manure and manure compost improves soil quality, and its improved texture improves its water and nutrient holding capacity. Manure is also being used to create energy through digesters that produce bio-gas capable of generating electricity or heat for farm and ranch buildings.

The Permian-Triassic Catastrophe

Several theories have been proposed by scientists to explain the two mass extinction events which took place on the earth 250 and 200 million years ago. The Permian-Triassic catastrophe (250 million years ago) was the worst of all five of the mass extinction events to ever have befallen the earth. It eradicated almost 95% of all species, 53% of marine families, 84% of marine genera and an approximated 70% of all land species including plants, insects and vertebrate animals. Many scientists suspect that the event was the result of a comet or an asteroid colliding with the earth. Others believe that flood volcanism from the Siberian Traps and the associated oxygen loss in the seas was the cause. While others continue to investigate the possibility that thinning levels of atmospheric oxygen caused the eradication of so many species at the time.

Technology: Plasmons

The electronics we know in our computers today is, as the name suggests, based on the transfer of information with the help of electrons. Using electrons has allowed us to shrink the size of computer circuits without losing efficacy. At the same time, communication with the help of electrons represents a rather slow means of transmission. To alleviate this problem, light can be used instead of electrons. This is the basis of so-called photonic components. While the transfer speed in photonics is extremely high, the size of the components cannot be shrunk to the same level as ‘ordinary’ electronics. For a number of years, so-called plasmonic components have proven to be a possible way around the dilemma of electronics and photonics. By combining photonics and electronics, scientists have shown that information can be transferred with the help of so-called plasmons. Plasmons are surface waves, like waves in the ocean, but here consisting of electrons, which can spread at extremely high speeds in metals.

When you were born you were just pure existence, when you die you will be a warrior or a senator or a space pilot. A loser in life you have been. Man is born infinite and dies finite.

You are the whole universe; even in eternal time you would not be able to exhaust your potentiality. A god you are — inexhaustible.

Whatsoever you have done is nothing in comparison to that which you can do. And whatsoever you can do is nothing in comparison with that which you are.

Life is so great there is no way to finish it. No way there is. The more you enter into it, the vaster the possibilities are that open their doors.

Man goes on being born every moment if he remains available to his potential being.

Miserable we get because so big our beings are and into such small tunnels we are forcing them. That creates misery, that creates confinement. Freedom is lost.

A man of understanding functions, works at a thousand and one things, but always gets out of them.
