Nanomachines in the Brain

Charles Lieber, a chemist at Harvard University, and his colleagues devised a tool that can record, stimulate, and modulate signals at multiple points on a neuron, from individual dendrites to axons, essentially duplicating the way that brain cells communicate. The device is so small — just 20 nanometers across — that 50 can fit on a neuron. While other researchers have made electrical connections to the nervous systems of animals and humans, until now no one has been able to forge a link at the level of individual axons or dendrites.

Astronomy: Black Hole at Sagittarius A

Black holes can’t be directly observed, because their gravitational pull is so strong that nothing, not even visible light, can escape. To study our local gravitational monster, researchers homed in on Sagittarius A, the bright radio-emitting body thought to mark the position of the black hole. Because Sagittarius A is likely fueled by the black hole’s activity, a better look at the radio-emitting body can provide more details about the black hole. The source of the radiation likely originates in either a disk of matter swirling in toward the black hole, or a high-speed jet of matter being ejected by the black hole.

Plastic Toxin

A new study of a chemical commonly used in plastic containers found that it causes damage to monkey’s brains, raising new concerns over the chemical’s possible effects on humans. The chemical, called bisphenol A or BPA, has been the source of controversy for months as government agencies and scientists have gone back and forth on whether the substance is a health threat. BPA has been in commercial use since the 1950s, and is found in baby bottles, water bottles, in the lining used for canned goods, and many other items. The findings suggest that exposure to low-dose BPA may have widespread effects on brain structure and function.

Physics: A New Element

Chemists will soon have to make room on the periodic table for a new element discovered recently. Element 118, tentatively called ununoctium, is the heftiest to date — it has 118 protons and 176 neutrons, compared with 82 protons and 126 neutrons in lead — but it is also one of the shortest-lived, decaying in less than a millisecond. To whip up a batch of ununoctium, a team of Russian and American nuclear physicists shot calcium atoms (element 20) at a target of radioactive californium (element 98) in a particle accelerator at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia. They will search for even heavier elements, some of which are predicted to live for several hours.

Global Warming:

Melt Rate

In 2006 signs of warming amassed so quickly that it was scarcely possible to keep track of them. A major study of Greenland showed that the landmass lost 100 billion metric tons of ice between 2003 and 2005, a melt rate three times faster than that seen five years ago and one that could be contributing to sea-level rise. A separate report indicated that the rate of global sea-level rise had accelerated during the 20th century; if it continues as predicted, by 2100 seas will lap shores at least 12 inches higher than they did in 1990.

Alternative Energy: Efficient Conductors

Penetrate.

Chemists are working on improving the efficiency of fuel cells — devices that use replenishable, stable chemical reactions to produce electricity — so that cars can run on hydrogen produced by renewable, non-carbon-emitting power sources. In one small breakthrough, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have created new fluoropolymers that conduct protons three times better than current fuel cell coatings.

If you want to grow up you should think of going deeper into your roots, and growing up will be a by-product of your growing more alert, more silent, more peaceful.

Until a pillar of consciousness arises in you, in dreams you will live, in nightmares, and a wastage your life will be.

At the very center of your being, ten directions are converging —meeting within you is the whole universe.

The only thing to be learned is not to do anything, but just be.

Luminous you are. Burning so high is your light, your fire, that there is no way to forget it. All around you it is radiating.

All that is needed is, mind should be empty. The ultimate experience is the experience of no mind.

Once you know what freedom, what tremendous life bursts forth in you as no-mind is entered, the spring has come to you.

No need there is to abandon rainbows — enjoy. But know perfectly well that a momentary phenomenon it all is.

No need there is to renounce anything. Centered in your being you should be; then the whole world is yours.

Like a white cloud the whole of existence is: without any roots, without any causality, without any ultimate cause, it exists. It exists as a mystery.

The goal is not the end of the line, something ending somewhere. Every moment is the goal.

Life should not be taken as a problem. Once you start that way you are lost.
